Understand English with action suffixes

15

Okay, so now we're ready, camera's ready, hold on, oh hi, he wasn't joking, James Minkman,

we've been doing this for like five minutes and I've made many mistakes.

I want to teach you something today, I want to teach you about the cost of freedom, what

does it really mean and why it's important that we have journalism to help us with our

freedom and damage that is caused when you don't have freedom and what kind of action

you have to take to maintain your freedom so there is no damage and why we use journalism

to maintain our freedom.

You have gone crazy.

What I want to teach you today is, you'll notice I underline certain parts and just

to highlight them, okay, make them more so you can see it, damage, okay, and not like

Van Damme, you know, that guy who used to do karate, watcha, Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Okay, ism, ism, freedom, I won't let you down, George Michael's freedom, not his freedom

and action, or action, Arnold maybe, I love Arnold, because I'm the gubernator, I will

give you your freedom and cause much damage when I do the action.

You'll notice I've changed all of these and made them, I've highlighted them, the reason

why, although all these words don't seem to have anything to do with each other, these

endings do, these endings are called suffixes, suffixes have a distinct meaning of their

own and they're our topic for today.

These are the action suffixes, action suffixes, meaning all of these endings on a word usually

indicate action, some have some other specific meanings which we'll get to, but generally

they usually mean action, a little bit of a lie except for this one, but they have the

same meaning of action.

So we're going to look at these words and at the end you're going to see how this changes

this to mean action.

When you damage something, damage can be a, can you hear that boys and girls?

Something's damaged.

I hope it's not my house or my car or I'm going to have to kick somebody in the butt.

Okay, so damage can be a noun or a verb, in the verb damage is to cause damage or break

something, yeah, so there's action in that.

Journalism is a belief, but journalists usually go out and do something to get it, journal

even, the idea is to write, right, and they usually go out to write about what's going

on, so there's action in there, right, but that's not just action, there's another word

in there, so we've got a bit of action happening there, but it's also for belief, and then

we have freedom.

It's not really action, but we can talk about something you're interested in or a condition

of being, and then finally we have action, maybe, yeah, participation in Canada, right,

participation with Al Jordan, okay, and I didn't mean the astronaut, I mean the Green

Lantern guy, you know Al Jordan, you know who I'm talking about, and then we have action,

actual movement, okay, so these suffixes generally have something to do with action, and they

go together, okay, so let's take a look, because sometimes people go, what is a suffix, well,

a suffix, you can actually break it into two parts, suff, okay, Latin means under, or after.

Fix in English, yes I know, most of you, fix, I fix the car, yes, when it gets broken, yes

you can fix the car, okay, but also fix means added, okay, so if you put these together,

it's something that's added after a root or a base, or some people would say the infinitive

form, okay, so we add these, the key to the suffixes, you add exactly what the suffix

is, so if it's ism, you add on exactly, ism, if it's age, you add exactly, age, that means

sometimes you have to make a change to the actual infinitive or base word, but this remains

the same, so we know it's added on, now, each one of these things I showed you before has

its own meaning, okay, so I want to show you the base meaning for each one is an action,

okay, so we have this, we have ism, okay, we had age, we had tion, alright, and the

other thing that we had here was dom, but I said to you, dom was not really an action

one, but it's classed in the same, okay, so what is an ism, well, an ism is, one, a belief,

two, a job, a type of job, okay, three, it can be an action, okay, that's what an ism

is, when we talk about isms, if you believe in Judaism, Catholicism, Jamesism, I made

that one up, it's a belief you have, maybe a religious or political belief, capitalism,

now, if you're into journalism, that's a job, right, now, action, terrorism, terrorism is

an action, it's not a job, although some people might think it is, it's not a job, it's an

action, okay, it can also be a belief, you have a belief in terrorism to get what you

want, but it's generally an action, agee, when we talk about age, it can be a condition,

condition or it can be an action, damage is a perfect one, if something is damaged, the

condition is bad, right, if you damage something, then you break it, but you need this, that

noise, that action, right, so we've got that one, so we've got one, two here, okay, tion,

basically for action, right, action, okay, it can also be for a condition, now, dom is

interesting because action is only a part of it when it's in a condition, we talk about

a condition or we talk about interest, okay, we have an interest in something, okay, for

instance, you have, sorry, I put that slash in the wrong place, oh, it's not somebody,

it's something, there you go, something, so basically, kings are interested in their kingdoms,

you're interested in your freedom, right, it can also be an action, condition, right,

he has freedom, condition, so these are the is's we're going to talk about, let's look

at a few words we can put on, right, now, sorry, oops, interest, interesting, in something,

okay, that's a cleaner analogy, I'd say, so let's take a look at that, okay, so we look

at these and you say, James, why am I doing this, why is this important, well, I'll tell

you why it's important, if you're doing academic reading or writing, what you're going to find

is you're going to be introduced to a lot of new words that are unfamiliar to you, if

you know what the actual suffix means, you can look at the adjective or the verb in front

of it and you'll actually be able to kind of go, okay, now I have an idea that it has

to do with something with belief, object or action, alright, so let's go through a few

words, let's just put a few words on the board, so I'm going to get rid of this, it might

be a bit small to see right now, but we'll make it larger as I get rid of them when we

introduce them again, okay, now a lot of these words I've done before, but let's see how

we would work it out, why don't we start off with the first one we talked about, ism, okay,

now what did I say about ism, I said there were three things we could say about ism,

right, one, two, three, ich, ni, san or unos, dos, tres, you like dancing, alright, so ism,

what did I say, I said, number one, it could be a belief, two, it can be a job, really

we call it a profession, right, profession, or three, I said it could be an action, try

and see if you remember which one I said, now I gave you a belief, one of the beliefs

you could say, you are Catholic, you could say, I don't believe in God, I am an atheist,

sorry, atheism, the belief of not believing in God, the next one we talked about, job

or profession, I gave you this one before, journalism, okay, it's a job, it's not a belief,

it's something you do, and finally when we talked about action, we talked about terrorism,

and you said there was terrorism in the capital of London today, it's because somebody did

it, okay, job professional is being a journalist or journalism, okay, or to believe in atheism,

that's number one, ism, okay, but we still got the thing here of action, it can be used

for action, now I believe I was explaining before, once again, this is going to be great

when you go to school or you're reading the newspaper because a lot of these ideas will

come up, and you'll go, it is some sort of action, some sort of belief, some sort of

condition, what was the other one we did, well, just to keep a small recap, we've got

our ism, okay, but that's small, this is a recap, so you don't forget, just keep it in

your mind, and then age, right, we've got T-I-O-N, or I-O-N, and then we have dom, okay,

just keep it in mind, also helps me remember, okay, so we did ism, okay, now what did we

say about age, well, we said age can be this, now I didn't give you all of it for age, I

said it can be an action, we did that, okay, it can also be for a group of things, or it

can be in a condition, okay, group of things, let's say you're filming something, like right

now I'm being filmed on camera, and you're filming something, well, in the old days they

used to have, okay, don't laugh at me because I'm not the best artist in the whole world,

okay, you'd have this, then you'd have film, right, you put that in a projector, okay,

now it was measured in, okay, I'm old, feet, you probably now say meters and centimeters,

they would say feet and inches, so some of this film would be called footage, now this

is a grouping of pictures, footage, we've got 20 foot, I don't know, we've shot so much

film, we've got this much footage to see, so footage would be film, how much filming

you've done, footage, we've got a lot of footage of James doing English, you do, probably ten

minutes already, okay, now condition, what condition was it in, well, sir, it was damaged,

sorry, damaged, okay, you go look, it was damaged, I got the box, the box was broken

inside, it wasn't working, it was damaged, damaged, right, so you get the box, so it

kicks it, poof, headbutts it, you get it, oh, and then my camera's damaged, it doesn't

work now, now the action of hitting it is to, sorry, damage it, all right, cool, so

AGE, as I've shown it, is an action, a group, or a condition, we use the same one to show

both, all right, so we did AGE, we did footage, there's a new word for you, so you can say,

did you get any footage when you went away on vacation, they'll go, yes, I took plenty

of pictures, now why do we say ITON, well, we have that all the time, now I said this

one is basically action, and it can also be, okay, a condition, so oops, sorry, ION, like

eye on, some people are smiling if you're into comics, eye on, right, action, or it

can be a condition, today I'm going to talk primarily about action, and you can see this

when we talk about when you make something, it can be a production, all right, production,

next one we can do is induction, now, we can look at the I for meaning in, SHUN for action,

and to duck, you're going to love this, D-U-C in English means to lead, so when you induct

somebody, you lead them into something, usually we induct people into the hall of fame, so

you became a baseball star, yay, or a soccer star, and then they have what's called the

hall of fame, which means you are some of the most famous players of that sport ever,

they have induction ceremony, induction, to lead you into fame with everyone else, induction,

okay, and I'm going to go back and use this one, okay, if you were born, and you have

two parents, you were reproduction, I'm joking, when you reproduce, it's to make something

again, we've got the action of action, and again, to make again, reproduction, so a reproduction

is from the original, so if there's an original painting, like say a Van Gogh, or a, I don't

know, who's the guy who cut off his ear, remember, that's Van Gogh, who's the other guy who did

the boxes, Pablo Picasso, okay, we're obviously not rich enough to buy them, but if you like

the art, you'll get a reproduction, that means something that was made again, action, cool,

huh, so we went from production, induction, reproduction, alright, so that's our ION,

okay, so we have two to go, now we have more than two to go, because we did production,

we did ism, we've done damage, now we've got one more to do, Dom is the funny one, because

Dom sometimes has action in its meaning, but it's not quite real, Dom, as I said to you

before when we did Dom, so over here, no, a little bit further over, I'm getting used

to writing on the other side of the board, because I'm left handed, and I'm thinking

like a right person here, Dom, Dom usually means a field of interest, what does that

mean, a field of interest, well, a field of interest, my friends, means something you

are interested in, right, so if you have, if you like Harry Potter for interest, it's

a field of interest for you, field as in it's an area that you're interested in, okay, so

we're going to do a field of interest, alright, a field of interest for you for Dom, so people

like their freedom, no, we like to be free to do what we want, it's interesting to, I'm

interested in being free, if you are a king or a queen, I'm sure you are a queen, okay,

then use one, well, unfortunately, I'm sorry, this is very sexist, it's not me, it's the

English dictionary, because there's no such thing as a queendom, but you can have a kingdom,

that's right guys, all of you guys sitting on your couches right now say, this couch

is mine, this beer is mine, it is my kingdom, you're right, it is your field of interest,

okay, cool, so we've done four suffixes, you've learned what a suffix is, it's something we

add to the end of a word, when we add it to the end of a word, it does something strange,

it can change the meaning of the word, okay, because to be free is an adjective, but it

also changes the class of the word, to be free is an adjective, freedom is a noun, so

what I've done to you today is without telling you, I've taught you how to identify nouns,

so these are noun action suffixes, like that, see, remember I was telling you, damage, damaged,

so these suffixes, when added on to, especially adjectives, become noun suffixes, so you've

just learned today, three noun action suffixes, so when you read a word, from now on you know

something you didn't know before, they're nouns, thank you very much, I will bid you

adieu, but before I give you the freedom to go about and do your business, and do a little

bit more damage to your earlobes, I'm going to send you somewhere else, where you can

learn more suffixes, more than these ones, we've got all sorts of ones, possessive, suffixes,

blah, blah, blah, blah, but where will you find them, ah, tricked you, see, I know, because

you're usually like, yeah, yeah, you always say the same thing, www.engvid.com, where

we can find you, and other good teachers to teach us English, see, but I thought you went

deaf for a second, I thought I damaged your ears, right, you couldn't hear me anymore,

you thought you were going crazy, well you were right, please go to www.engvid.com, where

you'll find myself and other teachers, who are pretty good, and we'll teach you English,

have a good day.
