Welcome to Sozo Exchange Vocabulary Challenge.
My name is Susan and I'm your host.
On this show we ask people from all walks of life to explain the meanings of various
American English phrases and slang expressions.
We are going to ask three people to explain what it means, how it is used, and who uses it.
Now, let’s meet the people who are participating in today’s vocabulary challenge:
They are all YouTubers and have great videos on their channels.
Ok, it's time for our first question: Could you explain what the word "dope" means?
Dope well that has a few meanings I mean there's obviously the drug meaning of it which I actually
don't even know which drug dope is referring to I think it's cocaine I don't really know,
um and then the other the most common way that I hear the word being used is when it's
describing something really cool or awesome,
something that people like are really into.
Dope the first thing I think of when I think of the word dope is definitely somebody who
is extremely lazy who lies around all day and who just pretty much does nothing with
Sure dope is like a slang term that describes something that is just super awesome
super rad excels at being just great.
It's kind of really hard to define because when something is dope it's just dope.
Let’s quickly review the meanings of the word “dope.”
When used as an adjective and slang, it means very good and cool.
Dope can also mean an illegal drug like cocaine or heroin.
A lazy person can be called a dope.
As a verb it can also mean to administer drugs to athletes in order to enhance their sporting
Alright, let’s ask them the next question: Could you give us an example of how the word
Alright how most people use dope in a sentence would be like if they see something that they
really like like maybe I don't know it's an outfit or some music or something that they're
really into they'd be like Oh my gosh that song is so dope man - or like Oh I love that
jacket is dope it looks so good!
It's like it's a compliment but like you know you get you get'n some street cred along with it.
You know Vanessa she really just doesn't do anything, I just feel like she lies around
the house all day - She's just a dope.
Yo those shoes are sooo dope, where did you get them?
I need to run out right now and pick up a pair for myself.
I l enjoyed watching their body language, especially Spankie and Rob using their hands
As a quick side note, Spankie used the slang expression “Street Cred” to mean acceptability
It’s short for Street Creditability.
Okay, here’s our final question: Could you describe the type of people who use this word?
The type of people that use the word dope I think I think it's one of those words that
actually has transcended a lot of demographics I mean I'm hearing that word used in all age
groups from teenagers twenties thirties forties fifties and up I think it's been around for
a really long time I think it's been around for a long time, um and really like all kinds
of cultures I hear it in like surf culture hip hop culture rock-n-roll culture just like
I think most people are using that word now.
How people use the word dope to mean lazy - honestly I never hear anybody say it I just
immediately think of dope probably because of Dopey in Disney.
Um I would say though that a person who would use dope is probably somebody who is doped
um who's probably is a little bit of drugged.
So dope is kind of an old school word I know I started using it in the 80s and it kind
of came back again uh I think guys probably use it more than gals.
And um you know maybe it's more of an urban slang thing but if you're a surfer or skater
