So today I want to teach you English expressions that are all related to babies.
You're not looking at the camera.
Hey everyone. My name is Wes. This is Interactive English,
which is all about helping you practice and improve your English skills.
And today I am doing a collaboration.
It is a daddy daughter collaboration because I have our little girl Emi and
she's going to do this lesson with us because the lesson is all about babies and
different expressions in English that are,
well they have to do with babies and they're related to babies.
So the first thing that I want to talk to you about are different similes.
Now if you don't know what a simile is, it is a comparison.
You're comparing two things and you're using the words like or as in order to
make that comparison. So as you can probably guess,
the similes that I'm going to talk to you about have to do with babies and you
are comparing something or someone to a baby.
So the first simile that I want to talk to you about is to cry like a baby.
And if you say that somebody is crying like a baby,
then that that just means that they are crying and I often think we use it in
the context that somebody is complaining about something.
Usually you would refer to an adult.
Are you?...What are you?... Are you complaining? What are you complaining about?
They're complaining about something they probably shouldn't complain about and
say, wow, you're crying like a baby. Stop crying like a baby.
You shouldn't be complaining about this thing.
You were huddled in a corner crying like a baby.
Do you want to say a grown man cry like a baby?
It's funny how a man reacts when his heart gets broken.
Some break down and cry like a baby.
I remember just crying like a baby.
Crying like a baby or crying like someone in college.
Then there is also the simile as helpless as a baby.
So when you think of babies, you think about, well okay,
what are some things they do? They do cry a lot and they are well,
they are pretty helpless as well.
So if you want to describe somebody who is very helpless,
they can't do anything on their own, you can say, wow, you're,
you're as helpless as a baby. Are you? Are you pretty helpless?
You're not that helpless are you? What do you think?
Who stood by helpless as a baby.
He was totally helpless baby when we met.
Just like our relationship. Healthiest little baby in need of tender loving care.
So she is getting a little tired of sitting here. So we're going to keep moving.
We're going to get going and I'll continue the lesson and just one second. Ready?
You always got to stay on the move with these little ones.
So I want to continue talking to about another similarly,
which is one that I think is very common and that is to sleep like a baby.
And what it means is just to sleep really. So for example, maybe you're,
you're traveling and the next day somebody asks you, you know, Oh,
so how did you sleep if you slept well you could say, wow, I slept great,
I slept like a baby. So again, babies,
they like to sleep. I think it's very normal right now. Um,
yeah, you're not asleep. It's about time for her nap,
so hopefully soon she will sleep like a baby and sleep really well.
At least that's what I'm hoping for.
She's got a fever. Okay. Give her two white ones and one blue one.
I'm going to sleep like a baby.
So did you guys get much sleep because I wouldn't have.
I don't know about Emily, but I slept like a baby.
Drove all night. And you slept like a baby.
Do you want to stay here?. Where do you want to keep going? What do you, what do you want to do? What?
What do you want to do? What do you want to do little bear, huh?
So we are back home after a nice walk outside.

Yeah. Yeah. I can't do it without you.
You're a very important part of this lesson. So I want to do one more simile.
that has to do with babies and that is as soft as a baby's bottom.
You could also use this Emily, as smooth as a baby's bottom. And again,
this would just be referring to,
well a baby's bottom that it's soft or smooth.
And in this, I think you would be comparing something you're talking about perhaps some
clothing, maybe some type of fabric,
and you just want to say that something is very smooth.
The way it feels know like, ah, it's as smooth as a baby's bottom,
Oh so smooth. It's like a baby's bottom.
Or perhaps it's just very soft, like a cushion or a pillow.
It's as soft as a baby's bottom.
Do they make my skin soft as a baby? You decide.
And I think this simile, yeah,
it makes sense because baby's bottoms there, they're pretty soft.
They're pretty smooth. And if you've never touched a baby's bottom,
you're just going to have to take my word for it. Yeah, it's pretty soft.
The next expression that I want to teach you.
We're going to move away from similes right now and that is to have a food baby,
and what this means is that when somebody eats a lot of food,
they eat a very big meal too much.
Perhaps their stomach hurts a little bit and it's really,
they feel like their stomach is really large. They might say, Oh,
Often I think it's used jokingly that if someone does have a big meal and
perhaps they've, they're just too full, they might say this. They might say, Oh,
I have a food baby right now. They might say this because, yeah,
it's like they a baby in their stomach except it's food instead of food baby.
Oh Marge. I'm giving birth to a food baby.
It's probably just a food baby. Did you have a big lunch?
Then we have an idiom which is to throw the baby out with the bath water.
Now, this idiom I think, in my opinion,
is a little more old fashioned.
You may hear it from time to time if you're watching a movie or a TV show, uh,
but what it means or where are you going, where are you going?
You don't want to be a part of the lesson anymore.
And what this means is to throw something out that is valuable,
that is important and you do so accidentally because you think that you're
getting rid of something that's worthless, that's not important,
and you throw it out and then you realize that there was something valuable.
There was something important in there and you could say, well, I just,
I threw the baby out with the bath water often I think it's used to talk about...perhaps an idea.
Something that is first disregarded as well.
This is useless. And then they come to realize that, wow,
it was a great idea. And you could say, well,
if they decided, they threw the baby out with the bath water.
I didn't buy a single second of that,
but let's not throw out the baby with the bath water.
I think there's something here.
All I'm saying is I don't want to throw the baby out with the water because
you'll get a wet, critically injured baby.
We're not gonna throw you out with the bath water. Don't worry. Don't worry.
We're not going to. Then we have the expression to be one's baby because, well,
a baby babies, they're very important. They're very special.
Everybody. Well, everybody loves their baby and if you save that something is one's baby,
you're referring to perhaps a project and or or even a business,
it just means that something is very, very important to that person,
that sometimes for people it becomes so important.
It's very meaningful for them to make it successful, to realize their dreams.
Another person might refer to it as their baby because it's important to them.
It's very valuable. You could say, yeah, you know, it's like, it's your baby.
This is your car? No, it's my baby.
I feel real weird about tonight. You hear that folks, okay,
this one's for Frank. This is his baby.
Sleeping with your fanny pack? Golden jab. Yeah, it's my baby.
And you. You are my baby. Yeah, yeah.
Then we have the expression to leave one holding the baby and this is actually
an expression that is more common in the U K so you would hear this more often
And what it means is to leave someone and have them take the blame for something
that happens and you would leave someone holding the baby. So for example,
Yeah, you don't want to leave someone holding the baby, do you?
For example, maybe there is a business and the boss is doing something illegal.
The employees know about it and before they get caught the boss just leaves and
leaves the other one's holding the baby that they will take the blame for for
any wrongdoing and you leave someone holding the baby.
