Are you able to understand English speakers when they're
speaking in English, or you're able to understand
different texts written in English,
but when it comes to speaking in English, you're a little stuck.
you get confused, and you don't know
which words to use. It's probably because you're stuck
translating. In this video lesson,
I'll be sharing with you 5 steps you can use to stop
translating from your native language, to improve your confidence,
Now, by you watching this video lesson, I will be
assuming a few things. First of all,
I assume that you're able to understand 60-70%
of what I am saying at the moment.
Also, I assume that you are able to understand
60-70% of what other English speakers are saying.
I am also assuming that you do
currently watch TV shows in English,
and you are able to follow, understand about
70% of those TV shows or movies in English.
Be that with English subtitles,
or without English subtitles. I also assume
that you are not confident. You're not confident
speaking in English, because when it comes to speaking
in English, you're playing that translation game.
Stuck, you're translating, you're not expressing yourself,
thus, you're not confident speaking in English.
Before we go through the five steps to stop translating,
to improve your confidence speaking in English,
I want to talk to about a little bit about the problem with translating.
With translating, when trying to speak in
English. Friends, these problems I've exprienced
firsthand when speaking my second language, which is Croatian.
And I've also noticed many of my students have the same problem,
when it comes to speaking English as their second language.
If you are constantly translating from
your native language to English when speaking in English,
it simply takes up too much time.
You're doing too much work, you're stopping,
the conversation isn't flowing, and you're not having a natural conversation.
And you're not confident nor fluent in the English language.
Also, if you're translating words from your native
language into English language, sometimes those
words you would use in your native language are not
used in the same context in the English language.
This can cause miscommunication to occur
when you're having a conversation in English. Finally,
it's too hard. I assume again that you
by watching this video lesson, you want to speak English
fluently, for better life opportunities.
Maybe you want to be a translater, but I'm assuming you want
to communicate with people. Why do all that
hard work, it takes too mcuh time, by translating
words, you are improving your translating skills,
but not your communication skills, not your confidence
speaking in English, and not your English fluency.
Fantastic, now you better understand
that issues when it comes to translating from your native language
to English when speaking in English.
But what of those five steps you can use to stop
translating and to start speaking English
confidently and fluently? Friends, the first step is
immersion. Without immersion, you are not
able to think of words, phrases,
and expressions you can use to use
and to speak in English. You have to make English
a part of your everyday life. Surround yourself with
the English language. Immersion is a technical
word for saying, for expressing the fact that
you have to surround yourself.
Use English, so, listen to English,
read English as much as possible, write in English,
and speak in English. I have gone
through this a lot in previous video lessons,
make sure to check out the video lesson I made on
how to think in English if you're struggling with
immersion and really mastering this step.
By you immersing yourself in the English language, you will
hear words, expressions, phrases, grammatical
structure you can use. You can use
in the second step. In order for you to stop translating,
and to speak English confidently,
you need to be using simple sentences.
Friends, you want to start small, with simple sentences.
As I mentioned at the beginning of this video lesson,
I assume that you understand 60-70%
of what I'm saying, because you are immersing yourself right now
in the English language. So, you do
know words in English, but you have to be
words, construct simple sentences in
English when having conversations with people in English.
When you're speaking to somebody in English, think of those
simple words, so that you can construct simple sentences
and keep the conversation going. You will know
these words, phrases and expressions throught the first
step, which is immersion. Friends, this is especially important
if you're shy, if you're an introvert, and if
you're afraid of making mistakes in English. Make really
simple sentences at the beginning in English,
and don't translate. Use those words
phrases and expressions you've heard through immersion,
to construct really simple sentences.
Use simple words so that you don't make mistakes,
and use them when speaking in English. By completing
understand me, and you can use those words when speaking in English.
Do not think of those words and do not think of sentences
in your native language. Think of those words
you've heard through immersion and use them.
Use those words, construct sentences and you will see
that you will stop translating when speaking in English
and it will come more naturally to you. You won't be
pausing, I mean, thinking, it will come
more naturally. Moving on to the third step.
Friends, it is very important for you to avoid, in the beginning,
and complex sentences. Now friends, if you're constantly translating
and you're thinking in English, start small.
Start with small, simple sentences, and
don't construct long sentences so that you sound
smart. Now friends, I have done this in the past,
I've translated long, complex sentences,
from English to Croatian, and I've appeard dumb at times.
Why? Because I was translating
our word, we would use in English,
to Croatia, and it wasn't used in that context
in the Croatian language. Unfortunately,
Friends, the best thing to be doing:
learn from my mistakes, learn from other student's mistakes,
and try to construct simple sentences.
Construct simple sentences with the words you know,
that you are familiar with, you know how to use
in that situation, so that you don't translate.
Sometimes it's better to use simple sentences rather than long
complex sentences, but yu're using the wrong word,
you're putting the words in the wrong order, and you don't
appear that intelligent when speaking in English.
Now, I do understand that you may be
an expert in your field in your native language, but English is your
second language. Even though you may be using long, complex sentences,
to express yourself in your native language,
try to avoid this in English, because you'll be
translating, you'll stop to think about
how you can make that long, smart
complex sentence in English, but you can't do that
in English when you're starting out. Instead of making
silly mistakes, like I did in the past,
and many other students I know, who I have taught in the past,
keep it simple. Keep it simple so that you're training
your brain to think small, and you can work your way up in the future.
Use the words you already know,
that you've already learned, heard and understand
how to use through immersion. Use those words
in simple sentences so that you're able to express
yourself, and avoid translating those long, complex sentences.
Friends, the fourth step to stop translating to your previously spoken English,
and confidence, is to not be lazy.
Okay, this one sounds very simple,
I've been a victim of this step, and I'm sure that
Friends, sometimes it's simply easier to think in your native language,
and to translate a sentence to English when you're going to speak
in English. But, this is not good for you
in the long term. You won't t be improving your confidence,
speking in English, but you will be improving confidence.
Your confidence being a translator.
Again, going back to the fact that if you can understand 60-70%
of this video lesson, you do know
words in English. It may take you
a little longer to think of those words, to search for them,
in your brain, but you do know them.
Think of those words when you're going to express yourself
in spoken English, rather than translating
from your native language. Do a little bit more work
in your head, think of those words, and you will
see, I am a 100% sure, you will be able
to find them, and them construct a simple sentence.
Don't be lazy, don't take the easy way out,
think a little bit longer, think of those words in English
that you've heard through immersion, construct
simple sentences, and you will see that your ability to
speak English more fluently and confidenty
will improve. Friends, this takes us to our fifth step.
Now, the fifth step is very, very
simple, and I have mentioned this a lot of times
in my previous lessons. Friends, don't be afraid
to make mistakes. Everybody makes mistakes.
I've probably made some mistakes recording this video lesson,
and I'm sure I've made many mistakes when I've
spoken in my second language. Friends, we learn from our
mistakes. Mistakes are a part of learning proces.
If you do make a mistake when speaking in English, because
you made that mistake by not translating,
by using those simple words, but you will learn.
from your mistakes and this will enable you to stop
translating in the future. It is very important for you
to be positive. Rather than looking at mistakes
as a negative thing, look at them as a positive thing.
Don't be afraid of making mistakes. Mistakes are
only normal. I've probably made many mistakes
speaking in this video lesson, and
many native English speakers do as well. Friends,
mistakes are normal. Instead of stopping
because you made a mistake, try to
overcome that mistake. Identify, okay,
Hey, I made that mistake because I wasn't translating,
I'll try to think of another word in English I can use better,
in that situation, and keep the conversation
going. Keep speaking in English,
don't translate, and by doing this, you will see
that it will be easier. You will improve your confidence,
because you will see that, hey,
I'm having a conversation with somebody, in English,
not translating, I'm thinking in English, I'm using
those words to express myself,
and I am improving my fluency. Remember friends,
the more that you are speaking in English, the more
mistakes you are making, the more you will identify the mistakes,
the faster you'll improve, and the faster
you'll improve your ability to stop translating in English
and to improve your confidence speaking in English.
There you have it friends, use this five steps to stop translating from your native language, and
to improve your confidence speaking in English.
