How to Use Netflix to improve your English Speaking Skills

19

Hello friends :)

Welcome back!

In this video lesson I will teach you

how you can use Netflix

chill, relax

and improve your English at the same time.

There are many great TV shows

on Netflix you can use to

improve your vocabulary, see grammar in use

learn slang

and see, simply, how native English speakers

or English speakers in general

speak, communicate, and interact in English

Friends, in order for you to improve

your English, to reach an advanced level

and to become a fluent and confident English speaker

it is very important to be immersed

and surrounded by the English language

Friends, Netflix is your answer!

Netflix is available in many

countries around the world

and it's a great resource

to be using to improve your English

First of all, Netflix is fun.

There are many TV shows

on Netflix, and most of them

use the English language.

Now, you do have some TV shows

where they do speak in Russian, in Spanish

and in other languages. But, try

to choose a TV show where English

is spoken. Also, when you're choosing a TV show

make sure to choose a TV show

that you like. Don't choose

a TV show just because I like it

your friend likes it

or someone on the street told you

they like it. Make sure that

you are genuinely interested in the TV show,

because by choosing

a TV show

that you are genuinely interested in

you will watch the whole

TV show and you'll be interested

to know what is happening

what the characters are saying, and

you'll basically stick to watching

that TV show and you will

constantly be surrounded by

the English language. Now, you're probably

thinking - But Adriana, I can

only understand about

40 - 50% of what you are saying

at the moment. The beauty of Netflix

is that you can also use

subtitles. If you are struggling

to understand what the characters

are saying in a TV show,

I suggest that you use subtitles

not subtitles in your native

language, but only English

subtitles. So, for example,

if you choose to watch a TV show

Breaking Bad. But your native language

is Spanish, don't use Spanish

subtitles.

Use English subtitles. Use subtitles

as a guide.

Push yourself, listen to

the characters speaking in English

and follow the subtitles

so that you can see

exactly what they are saying.

It will be difficult in the beginning

to watch a TV show in English

as you will notice that

the characters usually speak

very fast, use many slang

terms, but, friends, this is

natural English. This is

how natives English speakers speak

and you will see natural English being used.

By using subtitles

function on Netflix

You'll also be able to improve

your reading skills.

By watching the TV show

you'll learn about interactions.

So, how native English speakers,

English speakers in general,

interact with each other. Do they

shake hands when they meet each other,

do they kiss on the cheek, do they hug

what do they do. You'll also

improve your vocabulary because you will see

English speakers talking about

different topics. By following the

subtitles, you'll be able to

read, listen and

follow at the same time.

You'll also improve your listening skills

because you will hear different

accents, you'll hear people speaking

faster, some slower.

Basically, you'll hear

English being used naturally. Now,

you're probably wondering

Will this help me?

My answer to you is - yes.

Why do I know that his will help you?

As you know, I can speak a second language as well.

My second language is Croatian.

Using the same technique,

I used to improve my

Croatian skills.

Both my listening and reading comprehension.

If it's a first time

that you're using subtitles,

it will be difficult.

It was difficult for me in the beginning,

to read Croatian

You know, when you're watching a TV show

and the speakers are speaking

so fast, and you have to follow

those subtitles.

It is hard at the beginning.

But, you will get used to it.

That's why it is very important to be choosing

a TV show that is most

interesting to you.

So that you are interested in the content

And this will keep you motivated

to keep watching that TV show.

It will keep you

immersed in the English language

and, you're also improving your

English at the same time.

Another great thing about subtitles

is that you are able to also

practice the shadowing technique.

So, if you see a word

in the subtitles being used

and it's the first time you've seen this word,

you don't know how to pronounce that word,

you can shadow.

If you don't know what the shadowing technique is,

I do suggest that you watch the video lesson

that I made on the shadowing technique

You can find the link

just above here

Go and watch that to find out

what you need to be doing to apply the shadowing technique.

Friends, I do suggest

that you watch Netflix,

you use the subtitles feature

subtitles, only English subtitles.

Choose a TV show

that you like

that you're interested in

and start immersing yourself in English today.

To finish off today,

I have a question for you.

Meating many of you, from around the world

I have noticed that some countries

synchronise TV shows

while others don't.

For example, in Croatia

TVshows are not synchronised.

So, what does this mean?

For example, a TV show Friends.

In Croatia,

the characters will be speaking in English,

but they use Croatian

subtitles at the bottom.

Whereas, when I travelled to Austria, Switzerland,

and Germany,

the voices are synchronised

in German. So, there are

no subtitles, the characters,

for example, Joey,

is not speaking in English, but is

speaking in German. I would like to hear

from you - are TV shows

synchronised in your country?

Tell me in the comments bellow

if they are synchronised

and if in your country they do synchronise TV,

I definitely suggest

that you check out Netflix

use the subtitles feature,

start immersing yourself in English.
